Manic Depression essays Manic depression is a mental disorder in which a person, at times, suffers from periods of mania, in other words, periods when the person is excited and easily agitated. At other times the person will suffer from periods of extreme depression, hopelessness, fatigue, and suicidal tendencies. When the person is not suffering from these extremes, he or she is as normal as a regular person. Manic depression is becoming more of a problem and since it is such a growing problem everyone should be better informed about the causes, symptoms, and treatments. First of all, manic depression has two main causes physiological and psychological. The most numerous of these causes would be physiological causes. For example, childbirth is such a happy event that many people do not think that it would cause something like manic depression to occur. The fact is that childbirth is such an emotional event it can trigger many different mental illnesses, known as post partum disorders. More expectedly, death causes a large number of cases that deal with manic depression. Death is a torn issue when deciding if it is a physiological or psychological cause. Manic depression is said to result from a physical death, but how a persons mind reacts to the strains of death is argued to be the real cause of manic depression. Another physiological cause is an injury such as paralysis which is the most common injury that causes depression. Sometimes people feel very helpless and hopeless when they are paralyzed and turn to drugs and drinking which makes depression even worse. It also highly increases the chance of committing suicide because drugs and alcohol severely impair judgment. Blindness is another common cause of manic depression. The range of physiologic causes is a very wide one. The second leading type of causes is much easier to explain, which are psychological abnormalities, such as a chemical imbalance in the brain.
